Selection Tip: 80 grit is the right starting grit for leveling planer marks, removing old finish from a deck rail or furniture top, knocking down end-grain, and fairing dings before moving up. Step up to 120 once the surface reads uniformly scratched, then 180 to get ready for stain or topcoat.

Use Tip: PSA discs are non-vacuum - no holes in the backing - so they shed dust to the air. Pair with a shop vac at the bag port, or budget 30 seconds of compressed-air blow-off every 2 to 3 minutes to keep the disc free-cutting. Burnish the disc onto a clean, oil-free pad with thumb pressure for a few seconds after sticking; that prevents the disc from peeling under heat. Let the sander glide - downward pressure breaks the grain prematurely and burns the wood.
