Where to use 12d 3-1/4": 12d common-equivalent for code-minimum heavy framing -- sill plate to floor joists, double-stud assemblies, header build-up, beam pockets, and post-to-girder face nails where the IRC tables call out 12d or 16d. .131" shank gives the shear strength needed for hold-down patterns on top plates and rim joists.

Tip: Run a depth test on a scrap of the actual framing stock before driving the first wall. Heads should sit flush to a hair below flush; over-driven heads in shear-wall and hold-down patterns can be cause for failed inspection.
