SABERDRIVE CONSTRUCTION LAG SCREW, TAN - 3/8" X 10"The Midwest Fastener SaberDrive replaces a traditional hex-head lag bolt with a star-drive structural screw you can run from an impact driver. The Type 17 self-starting point eliminates pre-drilling in standard softwoods, the serrated thread pulls the screw in under load, and the round washer head countersinks flush with the wood surface for a clean finish.
- Size: 3/8" x 10"
- Drive: T-40 star (install bit included in the box, fits any 1/4" hex chuck)
- Head: round washer with countersinking arc nibs
- Material: case-hardened alloy steel for structural strength
- Coating: XL1500 Eco-Nano tan exterior - rated for ACQ-treated lumber and exterior service
- Type 17 self-starting point with serrated thread - no pre-drilling required in softwood
- Listed under ICC-ES ESR-4214 as a code-compliant lag-bolt substitute for structural wood connections
Where to use: Heavy structural assemblies needing deep penetration into multi-ply LVL beams, post-to-beam connections, and stacked framing assemblies.
Installation Tip: Drive perpendicular to the grain with a high-torque impact driver and seat the washer head firmly without burying it below the wood surface. Replace the T-40 bit once the star recess starts to round over, since worn bits cam out and strip the screw head.
Hardwood Tip: In dense lumber such as oak, hickory, ipe, or doubled LVL, the Type 17 point can spin before biting. Set the point by tapping the head with a hammer, then drive normally - no full pilot hole needed.
