IRWIN WOOD PLUG CUTTER - 1/2"

1/2" plug cutter from Irwin for cutting clean, tight-fitting wood plugs that hide countersunk fastener heads in furniture, cabinetry, flooring, and deck projects. The four hardened high-carbon steel cutting edges hold their grind through hardwoods and softwoods, and the 1/4" round shank chucks into any standard corded or cordless drill. The cutter's outside diameter matches a 1/2" counterbore, so plugs drop into matching holes with a dab of wood glue and trim flush with a chisel or flush-cut saw. Also useful for making short custom dowels from scrap stock.

  • Hardened high-carbon steel cutting edges for clean cuts in hardwoods and softwoods
  • 1/2" outside diameter matches standard 1/2" counterbore holes
  • 1/4" round shank fits any standard drill chuck, corded or cordless
  • Cuts plugs to roughly 5/8" depth for cabinet, floor, deck, and furniture work
  • Also handy for cutting short custom dowels from matching scrap stock

Selection Tip: 1/2" hides larger #10 or #12 wood screws and short lag screws in deck framing, fence rails, garden bed corners, workbench tops, and bench seats where a smaller plug would not fully cover the counterbore.

Use Tip: Cut plugs from the same wood you are concealing - matching species and grain direction makes the plug nearly invisible after sanding. Use a drill press when possible, or grip the drill with two hands so the cutter enters perpendicular to the face; rocking the drill tears the plug edges and rounds them off. Hold light forward pressure and back the cutter out every few seconds to clear chips. Free finished plugs by twisting them out with a screwdriver tip or by splitting the surrounding waste stock with a wide chisel.

Pairing: Counterbore with a brad-point or Forstner bit the same diameter as the plug cutter, drive your screw, then glue the plug into the hole with the grain oriented to match the surrounding surface. Trim flush with a flush-cut saw or sharp chisel, sand, and finish - the plug disappears under stain or clear coat.

Note: Designed for face-grain plug cutting in solid wood. Not intended for MDF, particle board, or end-grain stock - the cutter will skate, chatter, or burn rather than slice. Resharpen the four cutting edges with a small triangular or thin diamond file when they dull; cutting performance recovers immediately.
