Tip: Use 220 grit for the final pre-finish smoothing pass and for light sanding between coats of polyurethane, lacquer, or shellac. Sand with the grain in straight strokes and let the sharp abrasive do the cutting - heavy pressure burnishes the wood and dulls the grit faster.
