HOMEWERKS BRASS IPS INLINE CHECK VALVE

Spring-loaded inline check valve in solid brass for residential and light-commercial backflow prevention. Threaded FIP x FIP NPT inlet and outlet drop into standard iron-pipe-size plumbing without unions or extra adapters. The internal brass poppet sits on a resilient seat held closed by a stainless spring, so the valve cracks open under forward flow and snaps shut the moment flow stops or reverses - preventing the column above from draining back through the pump, boiler, or supply line.

  • Body: solid brass IPS, FIP x FIP NPT threads, 1-1/4" nominal
  • Internal: spring-loaded poppet, resilient seat for tight shutoff at low back-pressure
  • Temperature: 200 deg F maximum operating
  • Service: domestic water, well-pump discharge, sump-pump discharge, boiler feed, hydronic heating loops, irrigation supply
  • Orientation: horizontal or vertical - flow direction is marked on the body; install with the arrow pointing downstream

Installation Tip: Wrap two to three turns of PTFE tape on the male threads (or a thin coat of pipe dope on the FIP threads), hand-tighten, then snug 1.5 to 2 turns past hand-tight with a smooth-jaw wrench on the brass flat. Overtightening cracks the brass body or distorts the seat - the spring check does not need to be wrenched on like a steel pipe nipple. Confirm the flow arrow on the body matches the desired direction before installing; a check valve installed backwards will hold closed against the intended flow and you will lose an hour chasing the wrong pump symptom.

Selection Tip: Use the 1-1/4" valve where it matches the existing IPS line size; do not pick a smaller check valve to save cost on a larger main, since the spring drop at higher flow rates robs pressure and can chatter (rapid open-close cycling erodes the seat). For sump-pump discharge install the check close to the pump outlet so the column above is short and the pump does not lift the entire discharge head against gravity on every cycle. For well-pump discharge install one at the well head and a second at the pressure-tank inlet on long runs to suppress water-hammer when the pump starts. Step up to a brass swing check (full-port, lower head loss) for boiler-return loops where minimizing pressure drop matters more than the compact spring-check footprint.

Note: Check local code before installing on a potable-water branch upstream of a fixture - some jurisdictions require a listed dual-check or RPZ assembly rather than a single spring check on domestic supply. For chlorinated, glycol, or chemical service confirm seat compatibility with the working fluid; factory Buna-N or EPDM seats handle clean water and most heating-glycol blends but degrade in petroleum, strong solvents, or chlorinated process water. For freezing exposure (outdoor irrigation, unheated crawlspace) drain the line above the check before winter or wrap with heat tape - the spring chamber holds residual water and will split the body if it freezes.
